What is Christmas without gifts?! Most people will remember fond memories of receiving an extra special and thoughtful gift during Christmas, but you can get that same warm glow by giving a truly meaningful gift. Being an amazing gift giver is about the thought that goes into the gift more than the actual gift. A handmade gift is something that has been carefully selected and made with real passion and skill.

Becoming the ultimate gift giver starts with carefully thinking about the person you are giving to. What do they like? Do they have any interests or hobbies? What is the thing that makes their whole face light up when they talk about it? If you're stuck, you can sneakily ask mutual friends or family for tips.

Once you've got some ideas, instead of hitting the usual brands on the high street, look at small independent shops, craft fairs, markets, and online handmade platforms like Etsy and Not on the High Street. You will find something much more unique, and usually better crafted than mass-produced items. Remember to keep the list of their likes and hobbies in mind whilst you're browsing.

Why not embrace the hygge concept and gift something full of cosiness and warmth? Soft furnishings like blankets and cushions are the perfect way to stay warm this winter, whilst injecting some of their personality into their home. Warm lighting is also big in hygge, and handmade candles are a perfect addition to any gift. Who doesn't love a bit of food and drink at Christmas? Check out your local markets, and you can usually sample before you buy.

If you'd like to go the extra mile for your gift, why not make part of it yourself? You could put a hot chocolate gift together in a cute mug, bake some Christmas gingerbread men, or even attempt some festive jams and chutneys. Pinterest is a wonderful resource for handmade ideas. Making something by hand is sure to help you feel the festive spirit too.

When it comes to wrapping your gift, this should show off just how special the present is inside. Consider decorating your own wrapping paper - this is a great activity for children, and something we do in the Chibi Chi house each year. You can even buy pre-cut blank tags and decorate them to match. Or how about bundling up for a cosy winter walk and collecting some seasonal foliage to add to your wrapping? Holly is in full bloom right now and would look fantastic attached to your gift for an extra Christmas sparkle.

Christmas can feel overwhelming, but try to remember the real message behind it. Showing the ones you love just how special they are. After all, it's far more joyful to give than receive.
